5 Best Beaches in St Augustine

April 28, 2022

St. Augustine features 42 miles of pristine beaches. Compared to the rest of Florida, this oceanfront town is a lot less densely populated. Without massive crowds to beat, this is the perfect place to enjoy a day soaking up the sun and taking in the beauty of the Atlantic Coast. Looking for your perfect seaside getaway? Check out one of the 5 best beaches in St. Augustine.

1. Ponte Vedra Beach

Ponte Verde Beach

Ponte Vedra Beach is one of the most beloved beaches in St. Augustine. This popular destination is a well-known shark tooth hotspot as well as one of the most scenic backdrops for a beachside walk. The natural beauty of Ponte Vedra Beach and the nearby Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve offer nine miles of trails to explore.

This beach is also home to some of our luxury resorts. Golfers and fans alike flock to this area for the PGA Tour. Water sport fanatics gravitate towards Ponte Verda Beach too. Surfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding are all popular activities to enjoy.

The South Ponte Vedra Beach features grills and picnic tables. There are also plenty of restaurants close by. Dogs are allowed on this beach as long as they have a leash. You can also take advantage of the off-beach parking and restroom facilities near the beach.

Address: 2993 S. Ponte Vedra Blvd., St. Augustine, Florida

2. Vilano Beach

Vilano Beach

Those with a love for water sports and fishing will love Vilano Beach! This beach truly has a little something for everyone. Enjoy everything from skimboarding to jet skiing. The current created by the steep drop-off in the water make this beach the best spot in town to go surfing.

This is a great destination to bring the kids to as well. You’ll see a splash pad at the entrance of the beach ramp for your kiddos to play in. The Vilano Beach Pier also provides an artsy, whimsical backdrop that the whole family will rejoice in. Don’t forget to check out the stunning statues lining the walkway!

Take your dog on a scenic walk on one of the various beach footpaths or enjoy a picnic at one of the tables that dot the area. Other amenities include easy public parking, restrooms, and showers. Be sure to stop by one of the amazing beachside eateries before you head home for the day!

3. North Beach

North Beach

Families will love North Beach. With its relaxed swell, this shore is ideal for swimming. There are many access points to the beach so it’s easy to get to. If your family is a fan of going on walks, head to this beach via the highway walkover at North Beach County Park.

There are an array of conveniences such as accessible parking, grills, public restrooms, showers, and a playground. There are wonderful restaurants close at hand such as The Reef, Cap's on the Water, and Aunt Kate's.

Address: 3721 Coastal Highway, St. Augustine, Florida

4. Butler Beach

Butler Beach

Not only is Butler Beach beautiful, but it also has a significant history behind it as well. It’s named after a local businessman and prominent African-American figure in St. Augustine's civil rights movement, Frank Butler. He pushed back against the whites-only beaches by purchasing enough land to open up a space for people of color to freely enjoy the beach.

Butler Beach is also quite important ecologically too. Located between St. Augustine and Crescent Beach, this popular beach is considered a protected ecosystem. Nearby Anastasia Island can be observed by the shore. The island and beach feature dune ecosystems that support animals such as the gopher tortoise and the Anastasia Island beach mouse.

Visitors can enjoy swimming, horseback riding, and picnicking. There’s also a boat ramp and playground on the beach. Dogs are allowed as long as they stay on a leash. Once you’re thoroughly beat after a long day at the beach, check out one of the many seaside eateries nearby.

Address: 5633 A1A S, Saint Augustine, Florida

5. Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach

Named after the crescent-shaped shoreline carved into the Matanzas Inlet, this beach features picturesque white sand and unspoiled natural beauty. It is a bit further away than the other beaches on this list. Situated on the south end of Florida’s Historic Coast, Crescent Beach is roughly 10 miles from St. Augustine. Trust me, it’s well worth the trip!

There’s a vast array of activities to get up to while visiting Crescent Beach. Paddleboarding is a popular option. It’s also a great place to venture out on a fishing trip or dolphin-watching tour. History buffs may be interested in exploring the Fort Matanzas National Monument.

While this beach isn’t as easy to access as others in St. Augustine, it is far less busy. If you want a relaxing trip to the beach without the crowds, Crescent Beach is the place to be. There are plentiful spots for picnicking in the shade and delicious local restaurants close at hand. Enjoy convenient parking and public restrooms as well.
